Start from the shoulders, not the face
A man's silhouette is read by his shoulders first. Draw them before the face: a wide line set across the upper chest. A useful benchmark is to count in heads. The shoulders of a male character measure about two heads wide, slightly less for a teenager, a bit more for a giant.
The shoulder line also makes the pose. Our Manga Addict shoulders guide shows how a sloped line brings movement to the whole body. Keep the torso shaped like a trapezoid, wide at the top and narrower at the waist.
Thicken the neck and square the jaw
The neck is the detail that changes a character's style the fastest. On a man, it is thicker and joins the shoulders via a visible trapezius. Our article on the manga neck details the attachment in five steps.
For the face, reduce the roundness of the cheeks and straighten the jawline. The manga chin comes in four shapes; for a man, choose a squarer or longer chin.
- Neck: about half the width of the head.
- Jaw: more pronounced angle under the ear.
- Eyebrows: straighter and lower than on a heroine.
Build the arms in volumes
The male arm remains a construction of cylinders: the upper arm, the forearm, and the wrist. The difference lies in the thickness. The forearm is wide near the elbow, then tapers toward the wrist, which remains defined.
Do not draw every muscle. An overly detailed outline freezes the arm. Follow the manga arm method: volumes first, details second, and only if the panel requires them.
Give the character a firm footing
A standing manga man bears his weight on one leg. Draw a vertical line from the hollow of the neck: it must fall near the supporting foot. We detail this in the article on manga posture.
The feet are about a shoulder-width apart, which provides a stable base. Two joined feet create a fragile silhouette, even with broad shoulders.
Mistakes that make a male character look feminine
Five mistakes happen almost every time.
- Narrow shoulders, the width of the pelvis.
- A thin neck that stops under the chin without trapezius muscles.
- Round cheeks and a soft jawline.
- Small hands, whereas the wrist and hand are wider in a man.
- A pose without support, floating above the ground.
Across a series of panels, the shoulders must also remain just as wide from one panel to the next. Bulle.ai generates a complete manga project for 500 credits, providing a reference board with stable proportions. The Beginner pack costs €19.90 for 2,000 credits, which equals four projects. To assemble an entire character, also see our method to draw a manga character.
Conclusion
A male manga character is built with broad shoulders, a thick neck, a squarer jaw, arms in volumes, and a clear stance. Practice first on a black silhouette: if it reads as male without the face, the proportions are right. Then move on to the detail, starting with the shoulders, and see how Bulle.ai places your characters in a page.
